My Recent School Visits

One of the fun parts of being a children’s writer is getting to make author visits to schools.
Last week I spent two days in O’Fallon, Illinois, which is about a 5 1/2 hour drive from my home in Kansas City.
I made presentations at Evans Elementary on Monday, and at Hinchcliffe Elementary on Tuesday.

Here I am (above photo) at Evans Elementary School.
The room wasn’t as dark as it seems in this photo, but I was also using the overhead projector, so we did have the lights off.

The students at both schools had been studying my books for over a month, so they were anxious to meet me by the time the days for my visits arrived.
I enjoyed seeing posters all over the school that welcomed me and featured my picture and the covers and blurbs about some of my books.
It was funny though because the kids expected me to look EXACTLY like I did in the photos they had, and I didn’t bother to straighten my hair the days of my visits.
They kept asking, “How come your hair doesn’t look like it does in your picture?”

Here I am answering some questions from the students.
You know the kinds of questions kids ask:
“How old are you? How many hours does it take to write a book? Why do you write books? Are you older than my grandma?”
That sort of thing.

The students even made some thank-you posters for me. Here’s one of them.
Thank you, guys, for two fun days!
